Scio, Oregon

Scio OR Real Estate, Scio area and Community Information

Scio, Oregon, is a community of about 900 residents in Linn County. It is in the mid-Willamette Valley in northwest Oregon. This modest-sized town is considered by some residents to be the "Covered Bridge Capital of the West" because five covered bridges are located in Scio. Linn County's Covered Bridge Tour includes these bridges along with three others in the county. Scio is found to the northeast of the primary population center in the county, Albany.

History

Scio was named after a community in Ohio. That town was in turn named after an island to the west of Turkey named "Chios," which is "Scio" in Italian. The area was first settled in the mid-1800s, and the first post office was established in 1860. The waterway that passes through Scio, Thomas Creek, is named after Frederick Thomas, an original settler that built a home here in 1846.
