Brownsville, Oregon, is a Linn County community with about 1,700 residents. Brownsville is situated in the mid-Willamette Valley in the northwest part of the state. The first settlers arrived here in the 1840s. The community was originally named "Calapooya" to pay homage to the Kalapuya people that lived in the area. Later, the town was re-named "Kirk's Ferry," a reference to the ferry operated on the river by Sarah and Alexander Kirk. The community was the county seat for a short period in the 1850s before Albany was eventually named the county seat of Linn County.
Parks and Recreation
has been a place of leisure and recreation for area residents since the 1840s. It is bordered on two sides by the river. Today, Pioneer Park includes 26 acres of ball fields, swimming, camping and horseshoes. There's a modern playground and a dining pavilion equipped with a kitchen. The covered amphitheater can seat as many as 400 people.
